Secondary 1 Math topics in Singapore syllabus (updated 2024): How to best utilize this information: Be clear of the big concepts to have a wide overview understanding of what will be tested. In each topics there are key-steps that need to be well-familiarized. Ensure you are able to recall the steps of workings needed for all the unshaded circle points below to score well.

Big Concept 1: Numbers and Algebra:

  1. Numbers and Their Operations:

    • Primes and prime factorization

    • Highest common factor (HCF) and lowest common multiple (LCM)

    • Squares, cubes, square roots, and cube roots

    • Integers, rational numbers, real numbers, and their properties

    • Approximation and estimation in calculations

  2. Ratio, Rate, and Proportion:

    • Ratios involving rational numbers

    • Direct and inverse proportion

    • Problem-solving using ratio and proportion

  3. Percentage:

    • Converting quantities to percentages

    • Percentage increase and decrease

    • Applications of percentages in real-world problems

  4. Rate and Speed:

    • Average speed and related problem-solving

  5. Algebraic Expressions and Formulae:

    • Use of letters to represent numbers

    • Simplifying algebraic expressions

    • Expanding and factorizing expressions

    • Constructing algebraic equations and formulae

Big Concept 2: Functions and Graphs:

  1. Coordinate Geometry:

    • Cartesian coordinates in two dimensions

    • Plotting and interpreting graphs

  • Chemical Composition of Matter: Elements, compounds, and mixtures, as well as their chemical properties.

  • Separation Techniques: Methods like filtration, distillation, and chromatography for real-world applications.


Big Concept 2: Models:


  • Ray Model of Light: Reflection, refraction, and the properties of light in daily applications.

  • Model of Cells: Understanding plant and animal cell structures and their roles.

  • Model of Matter: Concepts like diffusion and particle motion in solids, liquids, and gases.

  • Atoms and Molecules: Structure and composition of matter at the atomic level.

  • Forces and Energy Transfer: Contact and non-contact forces, pressure, and energy conversion.

  • Heat Energy Transfer: Conduction, convection, and radiation, including their applications.
